It was considerably cloudy on Friday night for EMHR`s Small Business Support Hikes: Mt. Pisgah State Park Night Hike and Telescope Tour, so we didn`t get to look through the telescope at the full moon, but the group still got a great presentation about the moon from Susan Schenck, environmental education specialist with Cherry Springs State Park. Following dinner at Building No 9 Grille in Troy, we met at the Mt. Pisgah State Park Nature Center for the presentation and then went on a night hike along the Oh Susanna Trail! It was rather chilly and we even had some snow flurries, but it kept us moving to stay warm! It was a beautiful day for a Sunday hike on Barclay Mountain with an amazing group of hikers to kick off our Small Business Support Hikes: Historic Barclay Mountain! Our new programming development associate Rachel Flad did a great job organizing the event and getting the appropriate permits to have our organized group hike the Pennsylvania Game Commission trails atop the mountain. We followed up with lunch provided by the Park Hotel in Canton at Sunfish Pond County Park, where Matt Carl of the LeRoy Heritage Museum took the group on a walk around the pond while providing in-depth history about the area. WE HAVE OUR WINNERS! Our finishers in the Endless Mountains 430 Challenge (Gravel Bikepacking Self-Supported Race) and 250 Challenge came in yesterday and in the dark early morning hours today, Sept. 23! Jesse Stauffer rolled in to the historic train station (Bradford County Tourism Promotion Agency) at 3:38 AM taking first place in the 430 Challenge race and setting the route FKT of 42 hours and 38 minutes! Less than two days to cover 430 miles!!!!
12 minutes later, “Team Abe & Ramsey Trail Feast Fury” arrived, setting a men’s team FKT for the 430 route of 42 hours 50 minutes!
Jesse, Abe, and Ramsey were given a warm welcome by EMHR director Cain Chamberlin and race director David Landis, and were treated to gift baskets full of Endless Mountains treats and commemorative finishers medallions.
Yesterday, Sept. 22, we had our finishers for the EM 250 Challenge! We were just 36 hours into the race and saw a men’s 250 FKT (Justin Wulff), women’s FKT and overall 250 race winner (Joanna Friesen), and men’s 250 winner (Rob Nuyianes). Below is a breakdown of times (in finishing order):
Justin Wulff: Justin switched from the 430 to the 250, and while not eligible for the 250 podium he did set the men’s FKT of 28 hours 29 minutes!
Joanna Friesen: Joanna won the 250 category overall and set the women’s FKT of 30 hours and 27 minutes!
Rob Nuyianes: Rob won the men’s 250 race overall with a time of 34 hours and 33 minutes!
Rain is the forecast for the rest of today, and as the 14 riders left on the course start a new day (Day 3 of riding Endless Mountains!), we’ll go out looking for them and post updates to our stories. Let’s see what the weather shift will mean for the remaining riders of the EM430.

Quite a large photo dump from our visit to Rivers of Steel Heritage Tours in Pittsburgh from this week`s HeritagePA retreat! We visited with so many amazing people and heritage sites around the area, including Rivers of Steel: Carrie Blast Furnaces, the Pennsylvania Trolley Museum, the Rivers of Steel Explorer tour boat, and the W.A. Young & Sons Foundry and Machine Shop! It was an amazing trip with our 12 PA Heritage Area managers and our dear friend Augie Carlino at Rivers of Steel did a great job putting it all together for us and showing us around his home city. Our consultants from Point Heritage Development Consulting went on a tour of Sullivan County with us yesterday, visiting with DCNR Loyalsock State Forest District Manager Rich Glinski before a trip to Worlds End State Park, Loyalsock Canyon Vista, and the High Knob Overlook. They also spoke with our friend Jane Swift, environmental education coordinator at World`s End, as well as former EMHR Board President Melanie Norton during a tour of the Sullivan County Historical Society of Pennsylvania. These amazing consultants are assisting the EMHR with our feasibility study for a National Heritage Area designation we are pursuing. We had such an amazing time are our Annual Youth Heritage Sojourn last week with @endlessmountainoutfitters! We had 40 students from various school districts across PA and NY paddle 33.5 river miles over the course of the three day adventure from Sugar Run to Tunkhannock! We thank EMO for guiding the kids again this year as well as our amazing guest speakers and entertainers, including the @pennstatewatershedsteward, storyteller Steve Davenport, and the very talented Sophia Alvarez of the Wyalusing Valley High School for her musical performance for the students at @camp_lackawanna! For the last few years, the EMHR has taken part in the Wyalusing Valley High School`s 7th grade trout release event along Schrader Creek on Barclay Mountain. Yesterday, we had dozens of students visit our booth to learn about the EMHR and play our Bradford County trivia board game that teaches them about local history, agriculture, outdoor recreation, the Susquehanna River North Branch Water Trail, and more! Always a great event with a great group of kids, and its a plus that our executive director gets to chat with teachers from his alma mater. Thank you to everyone who came out for our third and well attended Endless Mountains Outdoor Recreation Roundtable yesterday at the @susqcolibrary in Montrose! We`d also like to thank the @railtrailnepa, @friends_of_salt_springs_park_, and the @susquehanna_cty_conservation for talking about their ongoing projects and events to our group! Following the roundtable, some of us went to tour the newly opened Bridgewater Interpretive Trail at the Conservation District office! What a great tour we had of @themetcalfmansion in Tunkhannock yesterday with our friends from the Wyoming County Historical Society! This beautiful Queen-Anne style home constructed by Henry F. Metcalf in 1895 is currently one of the many structures you`ll find on the Historic Tunkhannock Walking Tour. It was recently purchased by Jon and Denise Ebersole, who are looking to restore it after many years of vacancy and neglect. We truly appreciate their determination to save this historic home and make it something the community can truly be proud of. There were too many amazing features to photograph, but we were so taken aback by the Metcalf`s incredible architecture, impeccable masonry and carpentry, stunning staircases, charming fireplaces, and its many exquisite bedrooms and bathrooms. Even the original barn foundation can be found in the backyard! What a place! We plan to do all we can in helping to save this Wyoming County relic and we urge the community to do the same!
